Battle of the Coral Sea 75th Commemoration: Roger Spooner

We saw them coming. There wasn’t much we could do apart from fire on them. Our planes were meeting the Jap planes coming to us, and they were going to bomb them I was a first loader on the 538 gun We did lose a ship but a lot of boys lost their lives Anyway, I went and joined the submarine crew I made nine war patrols out of Perth, Australia They treated us boys good. They did. The only thing was, when I first got there, they held back on our beer – they wouldn’t let us have too much beer. They’d put it on the counter and when you drank that up, that was it.
