Developer Update | Year in Review (EN subtitles)


Welcome to another developer update. My name is Jeff. I’m from
the Overwatch team. We wanted to take a quick second to sort
of recap what an amazing year it’s been. Obviously, in May of this year,
we launched Overwatch and we were so lucky and grateful to have so many of you folks
a long for the ride with us. And then it was
immediately off to the races. We started updating the game. We put in a completely
revamped competitive mode where we took all the
feedback from the beta. We started Season One fresh with completely new
changes to Competitive Mode. It seemed very well received of course we iterated
heavily on Competitive Mode from Season One to Season Two. And then we made some slight Skill
Rating tweaks going into Season Three and adjusted how placement matches work. So, that was a lot of fun for us. Your feedback was essential in guiding
the decisions that we were making. We also had a lot of
fun introducing new heroes. Ana was fantastic. Sombra
coming online was really cool. It’s really interesting watching
you guys play Ana and Sombra because I see a lot of similarities.
Early on there was a perception of Ana being kind of weak, and
not getting a lot of play time. I think it was taking people
a little while to master her. We made a few small tweaks to her
balance, and the next thing you know she was sort of overpowered, and
now we’re balancing her down. A lot of people are asking
about Sombra changes the reason we’re being so slow is that we think that mastery
curve is happening again. We’re starting to see a lot of
high-level, high quality Sombra play. That’s not to say that she’s
perfectly balanced right now we have ideas if we
need to bumper her up. But we’re just being slow and patient so we don’t have the “Ana version 2.0”
problem again with Sombra. We also introduced some
new maps to the game. Eichenwalde was announced at gamescom. We’ve seen amazing,
unique play on that map. There was a great play by the South
Korean team in the Overwatch World Cup where they went up through
the window, with Zarya and did a graviton surge, and the
whole team did a coordinated push That was pretty amazing.
So, Eichenwalde enabled that. We introduced the arcade,
which had Ecopoint: Antarctica and a bunch of new game modes for
you guys to experiment and play with. So, all in all, it was
a really amazing year. We ran our seasonal events,
which we think you’ve all enjoyed The Summer Games,
Overwatch Halloween Terror and now we’re on
Winter Wonderland. We hope you’ve had as much playing
these events as we did making them. We poured all love and care
and passion into these events the content and the brawls. So, we hope you not only had fun but are having fun with the
events. And we’re like to more. So, looking forward to the new
year, there’s a lot of stuff coming and I wanted to touch on some of that so that you guys know what’s on
the horizon for early next year. We’re already talked about Oasis. Oasis has been on the PTR.
We’ve been getting feedback and we’ve told you since
BlizzCon that our goal is a very early 2017 release for Oasis. And we’re on track for that. So, look for that early in the new
year. It should be a ton of fun. I mentioned seasonal events. These are one of the things that,
not only have you responded to in an extremely positive way,
but the team loves working on and we’re having a ton of
fun making seasonal events. So, we have some cool ideas for
some seasonal events that, I think you might guess might be coming and some events that I don’t think you’ll
have any idea that we’re working on. So, there will be some
surprises there as well. There are other things going on too. I know there’s a lot of
small things that people would be interested to
know that we’re working on. A great example is customization
to your communication wheel. So, this is the wheel where
you press and hold the button and you get to select things
like “Hello”, “Thank you” or show your Ultimate status. We’re actually adding a control
scheme to it that allows you to not only access
additional voice lines up to four, you can
have set on the wheel it will also allow you to access up
to four different emotes as well. So, if you’ve been unlocking
voice lines and emotes and always wanted to
play one after the other you’ll soon have the ability to do that and customize which ones you have. You’ll also be able to use custom
bindings to set a particular button to trigger a particular
voice line or emote. Likewise for sprays, we’ll also
be adding the ability to have a spray wheel come up that’ll
hold up to four sprays. Now, you can still only have one
spray out in the environment at a time but if you want to use different
sprays on different occasions you’ll be able to do that
with the spray wheel. We think by adding this customization,
even if it’s a small thing it’ll make a lot of voice lines, sprays
and emotes feel more valuable. I don’t know about you guys, but I tend
to have my favorite spray on a hero and once I have that locked in, I’m not
as excited about future sprays. But I think about a world
where I care about four sprays and they become more interesting to me. We have other minor upgrades
coming early next year. For example, we get a lot of
comments about players wanting us to force party members into team
chat instead of party chat. Now, we don’t want to forcibly move
anyone from party chat into team chat but we want to strongly encourage players who a partied up to join team chat instead of staying in their party chat. So, we have a button
that’s very similar to the “Stay as Group” button
that we added recently. It will strongly encourage people
to join the team voice chat. So, you won’t always need
to type in “Team Chat” at the beginning of every
competitive match. So, we’ve got that coming. We’re working on multiple new heroes. I always like to give
the disclaimer that we tend to work on more
content than we release. Because we prototype stuff,
and sometimes it fails or we don’t like it and we go
back to the drawing board. I sometimes use Genji as an example. Genji was a hero that we started almost a
year and a half before we released him. We would work on him,
trying iterations of him. And we’d put him on the shelf for a
while, because he wasn’t working out. And then we’d come back to him. We have one hero that
I think is very promising. In fact, we’ve started to
move it through our art pipeline which means we have a higher
level of confidence in that than some of our other heroes. But we have some
really fun prototypes also. So, I hope those see
the light of day in 2017 and you guys get to
get your hands on them. You know we love making heroes.
The game is all about heroes. We also have other maps, beyond Oasis that we’re experimenting with. And like the heroes,
they’re at different stages. So, some are further
along in the pipeline. We have one map that
we have a pretty good level of confidence in that’s
a traditional game mode. We’ll talk more about that next year. That one is looking good, and we’re
feeling pretty good about that. And then we have a bunch of experimental
maps that we’re having a lot of fun with. I don’t know if they’ll see
the light of day or not but we are trying new
things with the maps. And we are trying new
game modes as well. So, we’re always looking for things
that we can try out in the arcade as a new game mode,
and thought process is “if it’s really fun as a new game
mode, maybe at some point we could introduce it to
the core map rotation either in “Quick Play”
or in “Competitive Play”. But right now, the Arcade really
affords us the opportunity to experiment and feel really
good about trying new things out without damaging the core
competitive game or Quick Play. We also are planning to make
some improvements to esports particularly to some of our Spectator
Modes in the near future. In particular, we often get a request to
have a map associated with viewing. So, if you’re watching a tournament,
or something like that then there’s a viewer map. We’ve gotten tremendous feedback from
our professional broadcast community they’ve been amazing. All these guys
that are covering the pro tournaments and the observers who are
covering the pro tournaments have been sending us lists,
and we’ve been curating those. So, we hope to get to some of
those features in the new year. The last new thing that we’re working
on, that we mentioned at BlizzCon but I’m not sure everybody
followed the news is that we want to give you
a way to find custom games. So, right now, we have a lot of great
functionality in the custom game feature but not everybody knows that
you’re running a custom game. You have to invite friends
or invite people by BattleTag. And we’re working on what’s
called a “server browser”, which is a way for people to
see a big list of custom games and a way for you, as a player
who’s running a custom game to say “Hey, I want this game to be
public, and if more people want to join this ruleset or map rotation,
please come and join my custom game” and they can do that
through the server browser. So, it’s been a top-requested
feature and one that is very common to first-person shooters,
and we’re really excited to introduce it to Overwatch. We think we’ll have a very-solid version 1.0 up-and-running hopefully, early in 2017, and then we have plans to expand on it later in the year. So, the first version that you’ll get will have a certain feature set and then we have big plans for the future. So, that’s kind of a small glimpse. I know that there was a lot there and some of it was kind of vague. But at least that’s a small glimpse at how 2016 went and how 2017 is shaping up. There’s a lot beyond that. We’re going to be doing these developer
updates well into 2017 as well so we look forward to having more
of these conversations with you. But more than anything, from
everyone here at Blizzard and everyone on the Overwatch team we want to thank you for what
an awesome year 2016 has been for the Overwatch community,
for all of us together. And on behalf of all of us on the

  1. Jeff why did you make Tracer gay? There was no need as we all expected that out of Zarya and everyone was fine with that. But throwing it on a character like that. Tracer is my favourite character and it was based off that love at first sight Overwatch is based around. This being part of her character has slightly ruined my love for her character. I'm not too happy about this since there was other characters that you could have chosen instead of her if this was necessary.

  2. Hey Jeff !! Huge fan of Overwatch here, ill like to see some old images in the video while your talking, for example, if ur talking about the changes that Genji went trough while getting his final form, ill love to see images from those changes. If you just only let the camera and talk without any image as support the video gets a little boring. With that said, i love all the updates that you guys do trying to have the OW community informed. Thanks you and have a nice holydays.

  4. on console , content flow feels a lot slower . is there any chance that a ptr could be added to ps4/xbox one?
    this could also make a big diference to how good the balance is on console as it differs from pc (due to aim), as a ptr would stop random patches being pushed out exactly the same on pc and console.

  5. Please make Dv'a matrix take damage so when it does it burns down faster. and nerf 76 a little or give Mcree a little more range to even him out with 76 :/

  8. if your going add anything id honestly love to see those 2 boys from the museum get added in would love to see how they interacted with tracer winston reaper and widowmaker. Cant wait to see what other you have in store I think the ones that havent been released are Doom fist sound wave and there was a small yellow person in a hazmat suit. Overall I honestly such a good investment in buying overwatch 🙂

  9. A few features I think that would be pretty cool… 1) Having an option to vote-up the "play of the game" at the end of a match. 2) Getting extra experience when you get an "epic" or "legendary" vote. 3) Being able to open loot boxes when waiting for a game to start.

  10. I want Capture the Flag in Overwatch, say, if you have the flag or whatever, you cannot use abilities. So tracer can't blink, sombra can't go invisible and Reinhardt can't charge or whatever

  14. I think the party v teamchat thing reallyshould change. Sometimes when you write to ppl to join teamchat they dont realise that they actually are in another channel, or that several channels even exist. Then when they realise they are in a 'private' chat they dont know how to switch over. Nice to see you are adressing the issue, i beliiiiive! 🙂
    I think a lot of ppl just use skype/teamspeak/whatever for parties since they party with friends.

  15. I'd like to make a complaint. This game has taken over my life and I can't physically bring myself to play anything else. In currently sat at working rocking backwards and forwards because I need my fix! Keep up the amazing work guys!

  17. Option to change weapon hand side would be awesome. I am used to play from left side in other fps games. This is actually bothering me quite a lot in OW. Hopefully this will be added in-game.

  18. What about correcting the voice chat bug (popular bug, can't access the room, it's a bug from the game not my PC ) we sent feedback on since a long time ago and still 0 fix.
    game is very diffucult to play without communication

  20. Before the game starts, the delay of picking the team, when heroes are picked there is the little icon of them. In game, the icons are different if you have legendaries, can we get the same before the game starts (it's a minor thing, but I don't think would be too hard to change)?

  21. Hoping that Winter mystery will stay as a permanent option. Forcing all players to constantly adapt is a really satisfying way to play.

  22. I dont want to sound rude but ital come across that way i hate listening to this guy. Listening to him saying (erm) 5 (um) 23 and (arh)13 at least a 3rd of what he said he was just rambling on about useless stuff we dident need to know about like exactly how pros won the tournament in my eyes people who use arh erm and um during their talks clearly dident think about what they wanted to talk about before recording come on jeff your a director you should be used to doing speachs without thinking about what you need to say next that aside.

    The fact you.r team are working on multiple characters and maps is no small feat all i want to say is go for it done a fine job so far keep at it

  23. We need demos of matches just like CS, if you really want improve OW in e-sports, more stats also and maybe a better training mode.

  24. Hi i really like game overwatch and i have a question what are you think to do a new map or character who have a something in common with a poland country or a polish nationality. A person can have a defence specjalization becaus polish people have to defends your country for many years. And another one can you think over it? because I am disappointed nobody takes my country into account to games like this and please give my a answer about my idea i will by really happy for this

    I have some problems with overwatch, always on the second half in the maps my voice chat turn of and i can't enter voice chat again.
    And i can't play more than one match in a row…
    I need to play a game then turn off the game and login again to play another match

  27. It'd be nice to have more voice options, like, "You're welcome", or "Nice shot!" These extra standard voice lines can strengthen communications and team morale without having to pull up the text chat. It's perfect for those who don't have mics or who don't really use them, and it also saves time while adding just a bit more personality to the game and it's characters, I think.

  28. Maybe you want to fix payload control zone or somehow indicate it (especially in Overtime period) instead of making santa skins and pointing out sexual stuff in the comics? Just make a game, not carnival.

  30. Slight skill rating tweaks from season 2>3… right. 2751 season 2 end. and I got placed 1731 season 3 after 6 wins, 1 draw, 3 loss. Impossible to get out iof this shithole.

  31. I really hope they eventually put in some single player missions, cause some of their shorts REALLY show potential for them, and it's some greater potential yet to be tapped

  32. Would making it so that you start in team voicechat and you have to leave instead of starting outside the voicechat work?

  33. Season 3 placement was so stupid!!!!!!! I won 9 games lost 1, playing dmg I got 3 – 4 gold coins every game and I got ranked at 2500, 300 less than what I left off in season 2. This needs to change it's unfair if some ones skill increases! Please answer this Blizzard!

  34. These multiple iterations of Genji. In one of them, I reckon he did not throw shurikens, but instead used his sword? Like a first proper melee hero.

  35. customisation is cool. The hero balancing based on PROS ability is very negative for the whole community. Just my opinion… that's what ruined LOL for me. Hope this game is different.

    By the way, oasis is good looking but an absolute nightmare to play on. I don't enjoy it. It is too claustrophobic, does not feel well designed.
