Hey guys! Today I’m going to be sharing my
thoughts, opinions, and feels on My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga. There
is a trigger warning for suicide with this book so be aware of that before going into
this book and also before watching this review. This is the story of a girl Ayzel who essentially
wants to commit suicide, but she’s not sure if she has the courage to do it alone. So
she goes on this online forum and on this online forum there’s a section for suicide
partners and so she finds a suicide partner and together they form a suicide pact. That’s
what this book is about, I don’t want to go into too much detail, because I think it’s
just one of those books that you just need to dive into and to just experience it for
yourself. It is a very dark book, but it’s a beautiful book at the same time. I will
say though prepare yourself, because this book gave me a wild case of the feels and
it was overwhelming at times. OVERWHELMING. This is one of those books that had me on
the verge of tears with every page. I’m not a book cryer, I don’t cry often reading books,
but this one moved me to tears. It was an emotional reading experience to say the least.
I would suggest having tissues on hand with this book. It was really difficult for me
at times reading this book, because it’s just so hard seeing these characters just kind
of feel like they’ve lost worth in the world. They feel completely worthless and I just
wanted to like jump into this novel and to lead them into a different direction and to
just show them that they are loved and that they have worth and that they are important.
So let’s talk about the writing, the writing was excellent. This book was so well written.
Specifically I want to talk about the tone, because I think that this book just did such
a great job at maintaining this very dark and sad tone. It never shyed away from this
dark feelings that these characters are facing and I just felt like with every page, you
could just sense the sadness and I think the author did a fantastic job at maintaining
that feeling throughout the book. The plot was paced really well, not too fast, not too
slow. I think it gave you this chance to really get under the skin of these characters and
just to see what they go through on a day to day basis and just how it feels to feel
the way that they feel. Something else that I really liked and I wasn’t expecting was
this mysterious aspect to this book. In the book Ayzel’s father has killed somebody, it’s
not a spoiler, okay? it’s not a spoiler at all, but in this book he’s killed somebody,
but you don’t know how he kills this person until later on in the book and you’re kind
of leading up to that point when she breaks down and really shares how that happened and
it was just so dark and it just added this really mysterious aspect to this book and
I just think that was a really great thing to add to this story. And I adored these characters
so much! I love how completely different the two main characters were from each other.
You’ve got Ayzel who just does really well in school, she’s very smart, and she loves
classical music. I think she kind of came of as a bit pretentious, but that didn’t bother
me too much. And then you’ve got Roman and he’s very athletic and he’s kind of the popular
guy, I guess you could say. I like the fact that we have these two characters that you
wouldn’t expect to be feeling the way that they feel and I just think that that was so
important, because they’re not people that you would expect to feel this way, but that’s
the thing you never know what somebody’s going through. You could be the smartest person
in your class and still be facing suicidal thoughts or an athlete who is just like the
star basketball player, but still be having these suicidal thoughts and so I think that
that was just so important to show that anybody can feel the way that these characters felt.
So those are my thoughts, opinions, and feels on My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine
Warga. I highly recommend this book, it’s such a beautiful book, it’s sad, but it’s
beautiful and I would just highly recommend it. It was so great! So let me know down below
if you guys have read this book or if you’re planning to and I will see you guys soon with
a new video! Thanks for watching! LATER! *weird noises* I would.. *more weird noises*

  1. I had this in my hand the other day at the bookstore but put it back down…I sort of wish I hadn't. Sounds like such an interesting read – I'll get there one day. Great video, as always 🙂

  2. I thought the book was kind of boring? idk I definitely liked it (got through it really quick) but I thought the plot was so obvious, like from page one it was clear what was going to happen and how everything was going to play out and I was sort of waiting for a twist to happen which is why I was a bit disappointed at the ending. and also when I was done I thought 'this is it?'  I felt like the story was too short

  3. I'm in  a reading slump and am looking for something different. I think this may be it for me! You just made me want to pick up this book, nice spoiler free review! hope you have a good day Jesse!

  4. I love how you review, as a creative writing student its so hard to find stuff to read, and I love that you review the writing, the pacing, the tone etc. All those things can easily turn me off from a book, but I can't get a feel of them from just the blurb. Definitely going to be going to you first for reviews from now on!

  5. Is it "complicated" to read ? I'm french, and I'm not sure to be able to understand (I've already read few english book before, but I already knew the story before, contrary to this one, so it was no too hard) … but I don't want to wait for the translation ! :'(  (sorry if I make mistakes 😡 )

  6. I absolutely loved this book! I found it very difficult to put down! Yeah, the subject matter was dark but it was also current and something many people deal with on a regular basis. It was kind of a refreshing read for me! I look forward to more works from this author!

  7. i think you've convinced me to read this. i was skeptical but i think i definitely need it. great review!

  8. Interesting, you just made me want to read this book even more. I have to save up some money to buy it. Great video, btw. 🙂

  9. great review! I want to get this book now. It sounds really powerful and thought provoking. I also like the cover and I like how the title isn't centered.

  10. I just recently finished this book as well, and I absolutely LOVED IT. I was sobbing by the end of it. Aysel and Roman felt so real, and I agree that I just wanted to hug both of them. I will read anything else Jasmine Warga writes.
And this was a great discussion! 🙂

  11. Jesseeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't wait to see you on yall west buddy! Haha. #selfies haha.

  12. Love your reviews Jesse!…. Thanks to your reviews i got to read so many awesome books… Like Miss Peregrine's home for peculiar children…. Loved it! And dude keep up the good work. 🙂

  13. excellent review, jesse!!
i don't like to seek out sad books but you really make me want to read this one. it sounds so beautiful.

  14. I read my heart and other black holes really quickly after I saw ur Instagram post! I loved this book so much! It made me feel…something?¿? Like powerful. I know love to listen to Mozart requiem d minor and Bach mass in b minor! All the references to physics, infinity space and energy are v v interesting. It is a sweet but poignant story and I recommend it to any one looking to a quick read

  15. I received this book last year pre-release from the publisher and it was my favourite read of 2014. I loved it so so much and I'm glad someone else does as well because my best friend didn't like it at all! I just want everyone to read it, it's so heartbreakingly beautiful. Your review was so lovely as well, was nice to stumble across this channel I will definitely be subscribing!

  16. I really liked this book too, plus the cover was done really well, and I love me some good book aesthetic. I found the writing style really easy and flowy, though. I finished the books in about three days, and I wasn't really trying to hard? It was still well written none the less.

  17. Books that give me the feels are one of my favorite types of books. When a book makes you feel a strong emotion, you know the author is a beautiful writer. I'm a total crier; I bawled at the end of Hunger Games.

  18. I really loved the book, it was so amazing and the fact that Jasmine was a science teacher and then became an author is something I look up to. She is an amazing author and maybe even an amazing teacher. :))))))

  19. This book looks really good!! I will definitely have to get it! Thanks for the good suggestion. Not sure if you have read it, but there is a book called the program and it's really good. It's about depression and stuff too. It's really good in case you were looking for any books (there's a second book too)

  20. (spoilers kinda) I did not like this book at all because the fact that her depression went away just because she fell in love with him is not realistic at all and the protagonist mentioned that he could not be depressed because he was popular and smiled which i found stupid. ( english is not my mother language, sorry)

  21. I've always wanted to buy this book ever since I laid my eyes upon it, but I didn't have enough money at that time so instead bought Dorothy must die. I am definitely going back to the store to get it.

  22. This book was amazing! I saw that you got it and recommended it and I got it right away. I couldn't put it down and whenever I had to all I would do was think about it!

  23. This book fell a little flat for me. It was pretty good in general, but I think it would have been better if it had been less predictable.

  24. I had to put this book down for a day or so more than once because all the emotions just overwhelmed me at certain points. But overall I really enjoyed it – it's not an easy read (at all) for a change. I think I need that from time to time…

  25. Just finished this book 30ish minutes ago… Started it this morning. It was SO GOOD. Can't explain my love for this book. Also can we take a moment and just let it sink in that this is Jasmine Warga's first novel and it was that amazing? Ah it was so well written..on every page there was an amazing quote. I'm going to have to go back through it and write them down. This book is a masterpiece.

  26. I went to the bookstore earlier and the overwhelming feels rushed back when I stumbled upon Verne. Yes. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. #captainnemo #feelsnotcontainableasthismoment

  27. I read this book literally because of you. Tbh I hadn't even heard about before. So when you uploaded this and posted the GoodReads review I added this on my wishlist.
I just finished it and it's definitely one of my favorite reads of the year. So emotional, dark yet sweet. I wasn't expecting to like it so much!

  28. I just finished reading this, and wow. I love this book. I'm so glad that I decided to read it, it has really opened my eyes to so many new things.

  29. I just finished this book, and was WOW, its so dark and painfull, I Couldnt stop crying!
I just started to upload videos in english (I've been uploading in spanish (main language) for more than a year but its a new project) Id love if you can give me any suggestion,
    xoxo from Perú

  30. @jessethereader and everyone, please, hear me out. if you like deep psychological books regarding suicide, I HIGHLY recommend Suicide Watch by Kelley York. its on amazon please consider it its my favorite book in the whole world and not to compare but it felt so much more relatable than jasmine warga's, to me ;3; anyway.. i hope you feel like reading it you wont regret i swear

  31. I loved this book. It didn't romanticize death or mental illness, and all of the emotions the characters felt seemed really realistic. Such a beautiful and sad story

  32. i liked this book a lot but the physics references aysel made were really cringey. coming from a person whose about to study physics at uni, the book appealed to me as when it said physics nerd i assumed someone who has researched physics deeper, not just someone who constantly talks about energy transfers that you learn pretty early on in your school career. other than that, i really enjoyed the book 🙂

  33. i just finished the book and i didnt cry mainly because i was so salty about the fact that they both flaked i dunno, im evil

  34. Tbh I love the first half of the book so much, but the second half fell flat and it was too unrealistic. LIKE HOW DO YOU CURE YOUR DEPRESSION BY FALLING IN LOVE??? sadly that’s not how depression works.

  35. I'm about to read this book now just finished reading Our Chemical Hearts. Love this book too. 😊😊😊

  36. I think I disagree, which is interesting to me. I finished this book and felt it was not only cheesy but unrealistic… like one’s suicidal feelings could disappear with a kiss. It’s so interesting for me to see that someone found beauty in it. But I guess there can be beauty in everything.

  37. Does anybody know where can I get this book? I'm from Peru and I mean to buy it in person cause I've had issues when I bought stuff online they either dissappear or delay like three month after estimated date
I'm looking for interesting books I guess this is one cause is highly recommended by many people I'm not a book lover this would the first I will read by initiative
send me info if you undertand what im going through [email protected]
I'm not native and that's another reason why I want to read this book

  38. I just finished that book last week. But up until now, I haven't move on. The story was so fantastic, I agree on what you said, it was sad but beautiful.

P.S This is that first time I watched book review.
