Reflection: British Art in an Age of Change

Hello, I’m James Russell curator of the
exhibition Reflection: British Art in an Age of Change at the Ferens Art Gallery. Reflection brings together over 130 works from the Ferens Gallery collection and The Ingram Collection of Modern British Art. This wide-ranging
exhibition invites you to explore well-loved pictures in new ways and also to
examine modern British art more generally. Who’s been making art in
Britain over the past hundred or so years? How are their experiences
relevant to life today and also their work? But mostly this is an exhibition to
be enjoyed, it is a spectacle full of surprises and with something for
everyone. In gallery 7 you will find a lovely rarely seen collection of works on paper particularly watercolours by some of the 20th Century masters of the medium. This is an exhibition of contrasting emotions. We look at how artists explore places in
different ways. Moving on we look at how relationships define us. We look at work
and play. We look at the question of identity. Who am I? What image do I want to convey to the world? How do people see me?
