To celebrate Mickey’s 90th anniversary Disney will launch Mickey the True Original Exhibition in New York City. (music) We will be highlighting certain
chapters of Mickey’s history. I’m Darren Romanelli. I’m curating Mickey the True
Original Exhibition. We’ll have a mix of artists past, present and future, where we will have archives and contemporary art. (music) I’m interested in Mickey Mouse because of his timelessness and the role that he plays in our permanent understanding of visual culture. Mickey Mouse is a true original because he is so cool. He walked through the world with like a swagger. He was a hero to me. Mickey Mouse represents the wonder of the vision and the visionary. I was asked to create the Cosmic Cavern. Kenny is very important because he is the last real living legend who was part of the Haring, Basquiat, Andy Warhol clique. To utilize Mickey, it was just a natural thing. I wanted to make a place of fantasy and fun. I have been asked to create a sculpture. It’s going to be comprised of mainly plush toys. All the things that you want to hug. For the exhibition we’re gonna create an eight-foot-high Bearbrick that we will wrap in recycled authentic Mickey t-shirts. I’m honored to be able to use Mickey as this focal point. I am going to be creating an extra giant ringer tee with the Mickey graphic on the front. It will trigger that sensation of familiarity as something that we all know and kind of act as this kind of unifying object. I hope everybody leaves this exhibition feeling inspired, tapping into old memories, making new memories. There is literally something for everybody. (music) Happy 90th Mickey!
